And it all starts with Nemaclys.

Owned and operated by Jean Claude Muller, a Swiss paragliding pilot of more than 15 years...

...along with his wife Arecelly...

The company offers tandem paragliding flights - one of the closest things possible, to feeling the way a bird does, soaring freely through the sky.

Some info about the sport itself, along with a firsthand recount - in photo and video...

This is Paragliding in Costa Rica

So it was - another adventure in the making, here in Costa Rica.

And getting there was easy.

Driving from San Jose, en route to Puntarenas...

...Nemaclys is located at the very end (and very top!) of a long and winding road.

There's a sign on the right, a little ways past the bridge in Caldera.

You can't miss it.

And wow - once you get up there...

It's quite the site...

...not surprising at all to see a number of people here - some ready to take to the skies...

Others happy to enjoy a relaxing afternoon - great food at their restaurant - front row seats to one of the best views in the country.

...

Eager to learn more about the sport - Michael Tarazi, paragliding instructor from Whistler BC in Canada... was more than happy to share a little info.

Paragliding in Costa Rica Michael
Meet Michael Tarazi, Paragliding Pilot

So how it works is...

A paraglider - or 'foot-launched glider aircraft', as Michael described...

Incorporates the use of:

  • A harness - contoured, allowing the pilot to sit or stand comfortably...

  • A series of suspension lines and controls, allowing the pilot to adjust speed and steering by pulling down on them...

  • And of course...

  • A brightly colored wing (not a parachute!) - that measures anywhere from 8 to 12 meters in length.

Wings are designed with a special fabric, forming a series of interconnecting cells.

A Sky Full of Wings

Open at the front and closed at the back...

Air enters these cells through vents - which once inflated...

...allow paragliders to drift through the sky like birds.

As Michael continued to describe...

Experienced paragliders are capable of traveling for well over an hour, covering hundreds of kilometers in distance.

Something else...

With a good understanding of thermal air currents, pilots can leverage their crafts at ridge-lifts - reaching heights upwards of a few thousand meters.

Incredible!

...

Well this was it then...

Jean Claude Muller, 2500 Feet Up!

Returning for another visit, this time with my parents - during a 2-week trip to Costa Rica...

Paragliding in Costa Rica Sunset
Mom with Jean Claude Muller... at Take-Off

It was a whole new brand of excitement.

Both Joan (my Mom) and John (my Dad), had never experienced anything even remotely quite like paragliding.

And having Jean Claude at the ready, happy to take them up some 2500 Feet in the air -- and over the Gulf of the Nicoya at that!...

Was incredible.

Doing the sport for much of his life, Jean Claude was able to take them on quite the ride too.

At one point - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up there...

You could see them doing spirals, descending in loops, over the water.

Easily a highlight, during their two-week trip to the Rich Coast!

Well what can I say - this is one experience, you simply cannot pass up, on your next visit to Costa Rica.

To contact Jean Claude Muller, visit the official Nemaclys website.

You can also reach the company through Michael Tarazi's Paragliding in Costa Rica site, 'Parapente Pura Vida' - offered in both English and Spanish.
