The Jungle Jam Experience
At the DoceLunas in Jaco

When my friend Joe and I heard, Bill Kreutzmann - 30 years drumming with The Grateful Dead - would be performing very soon, here in Costa Rica...

The tickets were booked!

...

Playing as a trio with his "BK3" - a group that includes Scott Murawski, long-time guitarist for Max Creek, and Oteil Burbridge, bassist for The Allman Brothers...

*And yes, along with some other, very talented musicians*...

The second-ever Jungle Jam, was just on the horizon.

...

Two days. Three nights.

An event rolling out at the beautiful DoceLunas Resort in Jaco - please read on... a firsthand recount of this one-of-a-kind, Costa Rican musical experience!

This is Jungle Jam!

Tickets in hand - making our way through the entrance at the DoceLunas in Jaco - and passing a really nice pool along the way...

Ready for Jungle Jam

We could already hear the music.

Right in the middle of the resort - the stage, setup on a beautifully-kept lawn...

...it was just as the name of the event suggested.

Large tropical trees spread across it - and the jungle... just beyond.

...

Over to the music...

Bill, Scott and Oteil had already kicked things off - and for the second time ever...

Jungle Jam 2012, was well underway.

...

Talking amongst the fans, it was interesting to learn - just how fitting this was.

As it turns out...

It was just four years prior - early 2008 - when Bill and Scott met for the very first time.

Introduced by Phish bassist, Mike Gordon...

It was right here at this very same spot - the DoceLunas in Jaco - where on January the 5th, the three played together, at a benefit concert.

And while Mike continued on with some other projects - Bill and Scott, eager to continue playing as a trio...

Sought out Lifetime Achievement Grammy award-winning bassist, Oteil Burbridge.

He happily accepted, and the BK3... was born!

...

Max Creek - second to perform on that opening Friday night...

Were just as incredible!

Peaking in the late 80s, playing some 200+ shows a year - they originally formed in 1972 - with founding members: Dave Reed, John Rider (you can see him on bass, in the photo above), and Bob Gosselin.

Changes over the years, the current lineup featured...

  • Scott Murawski, Guitar and Vocals (1972 - Present)
  • Mark Mercier, Keyboard and Vocals (1972 - Present)
  • John Rider, Bass and Vocals (1971 - Present)

  • And two members, who joined recently...

  • Bill Carbone and Jamemurrell Stanley, Drums (2011 - Present)

Again I have to say...

Max Creek put on some really amazing performances. The cohesiveness of their music - it was easy to see, these guys had been playing together for quite some time.

And yes, what a great way to celebrate - their 40th anniversary!

...

Looking back...

Something that really made Jungle Jam special - unique from other concerts I'd attended...

Was the intimacy.

It was so cool to see, musicians and fans alike, mixing and mingling between shows.

Even after hours, when Zach Deputy - more on Zach in a bit - took the show to town, playing along the Pastor Diaz stretch...

It all came down, to a group of really fun people - enjoying some great music - and each other's company.

Jungle Jam Fire Dancing
The Flaming Gypsies and One World Puppets

Was just perfect.

...

Yet another important element (and quite literally!) to the event...

Was the additional entertainment provided by Kiki and the Flaming Gypsies.

Kiki, Laura, and Kelly - all skilled in the art of fire dancing, brought a whole new feel to Jungle Jam - a variety of stunning performances during the shows.

Oh, and that's not all...

Andy Burke and his One World Puppetry, were also on the scene. Every so often, you'd see a fairy, a troll, a dancing bear - and yes... even Andy himself, dancing around on stilts...

Only furthering the overall fun factor, at Jungle Jam.

...

Jungle Jam Ryan Montbleau

More on the music...

Ryan Montbleau and his band, were also here to entertain.

Songwriter and musician - straight out of Boston, Ryan's got this really crisp voice - and his vocals...

Hilarious!

After just one performance - it was obvious to see, why he was nominated by MTV, for "Best Concert Experience of 2012".

These guys easily, won over the crowd.

...

Back to Zach Deputy...

Wow, what a talented individual.

One-Man-Band out of South Carolina...

Zach - with his 4+ octave voice range - puts on a show, unlike anything you've seen.

Using a technology called "live looping" - layering various sounds - one on top of the other...

Coupled with some spot-on beat boxing vocals, you'd swear you were listening to yes...

An entire band!

And it's so true... Zach was an integral part of the overall success, here at Jungle Jam 2012.

Each night - Friday, Saturday, Sunday - once things wrapped up at the DoceLunas...

TICR Videos - Oteil Burbridge at Jungle Jam

He put on 12:30am shows in downtown Jaco - two at the local teatro, and one final show - a grand finale if you will...

At the Monkey Bar, on the Sunday night.

...

A little reflection, man - what a great time this was!

Huge hats off to Eric Freitas, Stephanie Blatt, and Chris Connelly - for doing such an excellent job in putting this together.

Jeremy Sewell - thank you too, the videos you made (and that appear here on this page), are awesome! :-)

And of course, to the bands, the fans, and everyone else who contributed...
