Let's learn some more about the unique craft of silversmithing. Click on the following links, and you'll be taken further down the page to learn more about Costa Rica jewelry...

Silversmith, Victor Otarola

Stopping by the shop - today was a chance to witness one of Victor's favorite pieces of Costa Rica jewelry come into being - a process that can easily take over six hours.

An opportunity to learn more, one question was definitely on mind...

Victor - how did you get into silversmithing?

Costa Rica Jewelry Making Jewelry
Costa Rica Jewelry in the Making...

And as he explained...

The beginnings were in the nation's capitol of San Jose. Days spent, watching local artists and friends - practicing their craft in the Plaza de la Cultural - gave way to the learning, practicing... improving with each step of the way.

But this was only the beginning, as he went on...

These first encounters acted as sparks. A passion to create and share his work with others - and above all - to keep right on learning...

It was time to travel!...

Costa Rica Jewelry Travel
Mexico... Costa Rica... Colombia...

First it was off to explore his home country - visiting the many beaches of the Rich Coast...

And then - up into Mexico... hands on with a saw, learning how to cut and manipulate fine grade silver...

And eventually - down into Colombia - learning the art of soldering, as it applied to creating jewelry.

...

Throughout these travels, a number of doors had opened - meeting talented people, teaching, learning... constantly improving.

And in 2003, returning to his roots - back in the bustling beach town of Montezuma, Costa Rica...

Costa Rica Jewelry Piedra Colorada
Beautiful Costa Rica Jewelry of Piedra Colorada...

...Victor opened Piedra Colorada.

Next - let's take a closer look... a glimpse of the creation process in action.

Costa Rica Jewelry - Shark Tooth Alchemy...

Jumping into the very heart of the craft - today, Victor was busy working away on a favorite piece... a pendant, incepted from a megalodon shark tooth.

Costa Rica Jewelry Melting Silver
The First Step...

A slow and tedious process...

Combining the tooth with silver, and a selection of semi-precious gems - in this case, two sapphires, a black pearl, and a ruby...

It was easy to how and why a piece like this one, is such a popular item.

...

So the first step then... melting the silver.

And interesting to note... all of the silver used in the jewelry Victor creates - is recycled... previously used at hospitals for x-rays. Through chemical treatment, the metal is brought back to its pure and original state.

And back to creating now - a nice piece of silver to work from - it's on to the designing and cutting phase...

Costa Rica Jewelry Shark Tooth Phase One
The Intricate Process of Designing and Cutting Silver...

Once a design has been established - template drawn, and mapped out over the silver... the cutting part can (and should!) take a while.

Again - it's tedious - but in the end... well worth the effort!

Next up - is working with a base (from which to fix each component together)... lining everything up - so it fits 'just right'...

Costa Rica Jewelry Shark Tooth Phase One
Ensuring Everything will Come Together Upon Completion...

Well once the silver has been cut, and the gems and tooth - checked for fitting, in combination with the 'base' part...

...it's time for a little (or a lot!) of polishing - bringing the finished product to a beautiful shine...

Costa Rica Jewelry Shark Tooth Phase Three
Buffing the Finished Product for that Perfect Shine...

And in the very end...

An exquisite - and extremely unique - piece of jewelry.

Fascinating!... the amount of attention, patience, detail - that goes into something like this.

Thanking Victor, it was getting time to go.

Costa Rica Jewelry Piedra Colorada Montezuma
Piedra Colorada, Montezuma

But what an amazing site - seeing the creation of this Costa Rica jewelry, start to finish.

But for sure - do stop by to pay him a visit on your next trip to Montezuma.

You can find his work on display not just here, but in other towns like Santa Teresa, Tambor - and also at the Cafe Britt shop at the International Airport in Alajuela.

And something else too...

Costa Rica Jewelry Temple
A Buddhist Temple

During your stay here, be sure to stop at the Piedra Colorada River as well... inspiration for the name of his shop.

A beautiful little spot - it's about half the distance north of Montezuma, on the way to Playa Grande.

You'll know you're there when you see a collection of neatly stacked rocks, an asking for good fortune - a common sight in the many Buddhist temples throughout the Land of the Morning Calm.

Thank you for reading! :-)
